What Will You Learn?

When leg grabs were banned in 2010, many athletes were bummed that a dynamic portion of competition would be altered. While the goal was to mainly focus on high amplitude throwing techniques, some classics like Kata Garuma were changed drastically. If you are competing in a ruleset where leg grabs are permitted the takedown dynamic is completely different. This is where Judo By Old Rules shines.

Denis Zenikov looks to give you an extra layer of attack from your feet. Typically a low stance, or a guard pull can negate much of the classical approach to Judo. Top-Tier players were able to use this to their advantage to secure victory. Denis teaches you how to blend your traditional attacks with leg grab techniques. If your opponent has a low stance you need to adjust your approach in order to make their posture higher, or look for foot sweeps. Thankfully Denis covers this throughout the 4 part series.

When you approach your takedowns with multiple dimensions you start to leave your opponent guessing. When they think you are going high, you go low! Being able to attack the upper body will force your opponent to defend, which leaves them open for leg grabbing techniques.

Denis blends together both aspects of judo in a way that doesn’t require you to be a technical wizard with your lapel grips. Leg grabs equal the playing field and removes your opponent’s technical advantage! Focus on a handful of techniques that expand into a complete approach to takedowns.
